Evaluation question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Throughout the creation of my second magazine I learnt many new skills that therefore showed improvements in the final outcome of my music magazine compared to my preliminary task which was a school magazine.
Front Cover
When comparing the front covers of my music magazine and my school magazine there are noticeable improvements. I started each magazine cover by taking the main image and as you can see the music magazine (on the left) is a lot clearer and has a better quality image than my school magazine (on the right). This is due to the fact that I learnt the skill of using a professional camera (Canon 600D) where as I only used an Iphone5c for my school magazine which is only an eight mega-pixel lens. Not only was the camera quality better for my music magazine I had access to a white background studio with  LED lighting that also improved the quality whereas only natural lighting was used for my school magazine. During the creation of my school magazine I faced many challenges using Photoshop and found myself very confused at times but  perceived on to make it the best I could. Before I started the main construction of my music magazine I watched tutorials on YouTube where I developed key knowledge that helped me create an improved music magazine. I learnt how to enlarge my background image therefore in my music magazine there isn't any dead space due to the image filling as much as possible where as the image on my school magazine is very zoomed out. I also learnt how to effectively layout my music magazine by taking inspiration in my research and planning from magazines that I'd seen and liked, for example I added more cover lines to my music magazine and included a bold strapline. I ensured that I added popular artists and bands because I learnt that this was a way that I could attract different audiences who enjoy there music which would make them want to read the magazine. It is important to have a clear colour scheme that isn't bland so it makes the cover interesting and that is why I used the colours red, white and black because they go well but also contrast each other at the same time which helps them to stand out. In my school magazine I stuck to the colour scheme of blue which is very simple and doesn't stand out as well. When comparing the puffs on my magazines, the school magazines puff has a lot of dead space and the writing isn't well positioned where as I made the writing central in white font on a black background so it stood out on my music magazine. The mastheads of both of my magazines are my favourite part but for my music magazine I learnt that it is important to be creative during the construction of my masthead so it stands out compared to others and that is why I included an image of an actual record.

Contents Page
When comparing the two contents page I feel like I have made vast improvements from my school magazine to my music magazine. I learnt that in a professional magazine there has to be at least sixty pages or more to meet the standards of the consumer due them paying slightly more for magazine and under each image on the page has to be a page number and a few words saying what the page is about. On my both magazine I continued using the same colour scheme to ensure fluidity from the front cover to the contents but on my school magazine by only using blue it made my magazine quite dull. On my music magazine I learnt how to create my own QR code which proved quite difficult at first but I soon got use to making it! Unlike my school magazine I also added a page number to the contents page which I had not known to do before when creating my school magazine. Throughout the process of my media As level when I created my music magazine I had applied a lot of the knowledge I had learnt to all the pages I had made.

Evaluation question 5.

How did you attract/address your audience?

When making my magazine the audience was always a key element which helped me make my decision, for example I would always think what would appeal to me if I was going to buy a music magazine and this would help me make my decision. On my front cover which is pictured below, I added various elements to attract my audience such as cover lines which are bold and are of famous bands & artists so it catches peoples eye. I used a strapline which I put in red to contrast the white background and white writing so it stands out and so people see 'The UKs biggest music magazine' which makes them want to find out what makes it the 'biggest music magazine'. I added two images on the front cover with the aim to make people curious as to what the articles are about with each image having a quote from the articles. Finally I used three main colours, red, white and black, in order to create fluidity throughout the cover and so it looked smart and professional

On my contents I used similar techniques in order to attract my audience, such as using the red box with my title in it which was in white so they contrast and would stand out. I used 4 images on the contents to make people intrigued about the different articles with the page numbers and a short line underneath saying something about the image/article. Unlike my front cover I added a QR code, which I added to attract my audience because it gives them the opportunity to interact further with 'RECORD'. I also included a competition to win 'Parklife' festival tickets which I aimed to help attract my audience who enjoyed music. Finally I listed all pages in my magazine under categories: 'Features', 'Artist Special' and 'Every month', I done this to make it easier to find what they want therefore making it more attractive to the consumer.

On my double page spread I wrote an article in the style of in an interview so questions that my audience would wish to be asked could be answered therefore letting them get to know the artist better. By doing this it would attract my audience because it would make them intrigued therefore they would want to read it. To keep the fluidity throughout my whole magazine I carried on using the colour scheme which was shown on the front cover where my artist also featured in the main image. I added a quote from the article so the audience would have an understanding on what the article was on and included up to seven images.

Double page spread article.

After 3 hours on set Grayce still looks as radiant as ever… Today we put Grayce in two main looks, the simplistic one shirt & black dress and the edgy leather jacket with black jeans! Now it’s time to meet the star herself so we can ask a few questions and she can tell us how she did it.

Where did it all begin?

When I was about 7 years old my mum took me to a local talent performance to watch all the contestants & it just inspired me so much to try something like that so that’s what I did! I had always enjoyed music and from my earliest memory I was always being encouraged to make the most of the talent I had. One day I decided I just needed to go for it and give singing in front of a live audience a go! I lined up a gig in my local pub, just something small to start me off and it couldn’t have gone better, I got a standing ovation and was hired permanently as a weekly act. I had lived in central London all my life which hosted many opportunities for me and one day I decided if I really wanted to get into the music industry I’d have to be noticed so I decided to record a few tracks to send to anyone who would listen! That’s when it happened… I got the call from Cassie (my very own agent), she set me up with various record labels so I could show them what I had to offer and then it was down to me to decide from the 3 who wanted me. 2 years on I wouldn’t change a thing, singing is my passion & there isn’t a day that goes by when I’m not doing it.

That sounds amazing! So what does a day in the life of Grayce consist of?

My schedule is hectic recently! I start the day with a breakfast which is usually a bowl of cereal or eggs on toast because it’s really helpful with waking me up and getting me ready for the day. I then have a shower, get ready and do my makeup then I begin my day. My day can consist of anything from gigs to photo shoots to radio interviews to charity events but there is never a dull moment.

Who is your inspiration?

My music inspiration is Whitney Houston because her voice is so powerful & she is still well known for her amazing career today. Another inspiration of mine is my mum because she has never stopped encouraging me to follow my dreams and she has the most beautiful voice.

Have you got any exciting news or things coming up?

Yes I will be releasing a new album soon which I can’t wait for you all to hear because I’ve spent so much time and hard work in the studio producing this with a few other artists. I also have a sell-out world tour which begins in June and I’ll be going to China where I’ve never been before and I can’t wait!

Discussion of software learning development.

Throughout the process of making my school magazine & the research and planning of my music magazine, I have developed many new skills which I hope will help to create a better, improved music magazine. I used Photoshop as my main software where I edited and put together my school magazine and for the creation of my music magazine I plan to use the same. Some of the tools that I have come to understand well is the magic wand tool which can be used to cut out an image, for example when cutting an image off a background you can delete the background with the magic wand tool. The layers help separate each item and you can turn each layer off by clicking the eye as well as text box which you can edit the colour, font and style. Throughout the process of making my music magazine I will still be learning many new things about the software but my knowledge has developed since creating my first magazine.

Equipment Chosen.

When doing my photoshoot I set two lights up facing my model directly so I could take clear images of my models. I used a Canon 600D to take my images so I could get the clearest images possible and so they look professional to my readers.

My Model.

My model is Grayce Durden who is pictured in the shots I took above. In this photoshoot I tested how my model performed in front of the camera as well as testing lighting and different settings on my camera so I could take the best pictures for my music magazine. I also tested makeup looks on my model so I have an idea of what i may go for in my shoot and these are some of the products that i used on my model.
I used this Urban Decay pallette to do the eye makeup for grayce where i created a glittery look with a smokey effect.

I used Soft & Gentle highlighter from Mac to add a glowing effect to my model so her cheekbones stand out more.
