Initial Ideas

I will produce a magazine called 'Perk' or 'Label' which i plan to be an indie magazine. I have chosen my model, Grayce Durden because she represents the indie look that I'm going for and I feel will help me produce strong images which comply to conventions of a magazine. I will using a simple studio for my location or a graffiti wall in London depending on the results of my focus group. The cover lines I will use on my front cover to entice new reader are going to be on interviews, reviewed music or list of bands that feature throughout. The colour scheme I'm going to use is red, black and white but when I complete questionnaires with my focus group I will ask their opinion and for other ideas they may have to improve my magazine.

Typography.

On my magazine i will be using San Serif on my front cover because it is easier to read, conversely my DPS will use serif because it is easier to read when close up.

Colour Wheel.

Q Magazine Lana Del Ray Double Page Spread

This double page spread from Q magazine features the artist Lana Del Ray and my favourite part is the use of editing where blue tones have been use to give a professional look but i dislike how the drop cap letter is unclear of what the 'S' means.

NME Lily Allen Double Page Spread

In my opinion this is my least favourite double page spread because the colour scheme used is quite boring and the model used (lily Allen) is quite casually dressed and does not like a lot of effort has been put in. I like how key names in the article are written in a different fonts and the colour red to show how they are significant.

Q magazine Jay-Z Double Page Spread

When first looking at this double page spread i'm instantly drawn to the page because of the editing techniques used where the colour red and blue are blended across the page which attracts the reader as well as using the rapper Jay-Z. For some customers the letter 'J' may become distracting when reading the text so may put them off reading the double page spread.

NME Magazine contents analysis

This issue of NME magazine is one of my favourite contents that i've analised due to band index which shows the bands featured in this magazine but if i was to change a part of this contents i would add another picture because this will entice the customers to the magazine as it becomes more interesting to them. When first looking at this magazine i notice how it is very busy which may become intimidating to the reader as it is a lot to take in or the contents.

Classic Rock Magazine contents analysis

The Classic Rock contents features four images which is my favourite part of this contents because it makes it more interesting and with each image an anchor text is used to show where the reader can find out more about why the picture is there. In this contents I don't like how the pictures are edited using different colour schemes that don't all go together nicely so certain aspects clash.

Q Magazine contents analysis

This issue of Q music contents page is clearing set out with a strong structure and i like how the page numbers have been divided into different sections. Despite the colour scheme being consistent throughout the page it can be quite dull and boring to some readers and may not find it exciting enough to buy but for those looking for a professional finish it is well suited.

B&S front cover analysis

In this issue of 'B&S' magazine i feel that too many colours are used which make it seem unprofessional but i like the use of bold fonts meaning key words stand out on the cover. The image is not half body therefore the cover looks cluttered to possible buyers.

Q front cover analysis

In my opinion this magazine is very powerful and eye-catching due to the use of contrasting colours. The red and black help the magazine to stand out to possible customers and create a strong rock image. I also like the use of the silver and chrome because it goes with the rain and skin tone of the star on the front cover.

NME front cover analysis

In my opinion this magazine is well structured and follows conventions to a professional magazine with a clear colour scheme where they use contrasting colours (red & blue) to make the cover stand out. They clearly display the magazine is for music with the prop of a record in the cover image and the title 'NME' standing for 'New Musical Express'.

What makes a good magazine?

Introduction.

My name is Eleanor Hickman I am a student at Chislehurst School for Girls and I am currently studying Geography, media and english language. On this blog I will be showing the process of making a music magazine and what steps I took to become not  only a consumer of media but a producer. Through hard work and organisation, i hope to be able to make a professional looking music magazine.
I recently finished making my school magazine where I learnt about the conventions of a magazine and is expected by readers and publishers who will be publishing my magazine. My aim is to show my improvement from my school to my music magazine by using all the new techniques i have been taught.
